1. Start with the part and the process
Before judging a supplier, define what the supplier must do. A shop that is well suited to aluminum prototypes may not be suitable for hardened steel production, tight-tolerance grinding, complex 5-axis work, or a part that requires controlled subcontracted treatment.
Write down the manufacturing route, material, surface treatment, critical dimensions, tolerance, surface finish, quantity, annual volume, inspection needs, and destination country. This gives the supplier conversation a measurable frame.
2. Verify the actual equipment
Ask for exact machine make and model, year or age range, axis configuration, travel, spindle capability, tooling, probing, workholding, and whether the equipment is owned, leased, shared, or subcontracted. A photo of a machine on a shop floor does not prove that it will be available for your job.
- For milling: travel, spindle, toolholding, probing, 3+2 or simultaneous 5-axis workflow, and fixture strategy.
- For turning: bar capacity, chuck, turret, live tooling, sub-spindle, steady rest, and bar-feed requirements.
- For EDM or grinding: the actual machine type, accuracy claims, measurement method, and process experience with comparable materials.
3. Look for process capability, not only machine capability
A capable shop can explain how it controls the work. Ask who programs the part, how setups are documented, how tools and offsets are managed, how first articles are approved, and what happens when an inspection result is out of tolerance.

4. Treat certifications as one input
Certifications can matter for a project, but they do not replace evidence that the supplier can make the specific part. Ask what scope the certificate covers, who performs the work, how inspection records are retained, and whether the same process will be used for your production.
5. Use a staged decision
Move from capability discussion to sample or first-article work before committing to a larger production order when the risk warrants it. For sensitive parts, agree on confidentiality, drawing revision, inspection points, material documentation, acceptance criteria, packaging, and what happens if the result does not meet the agreed requirements.
That staged approach is more informative than asking for a “top 10” list. It also avoids publishing supplier rankings that have no transparent methodology.
