How to qualify a 5-axis machining supplier in China.
5-axis capability is not a checkbox. A buyer needs to understand whether the supplier is doing indexed 3+2 work or simultaneous 5-axis machining, how the machine and CAM system are configured, and how the shop proves the resulting geometry and finish.
3+2 positioning and simultaneous 5-axis are different capabilities.
Many suppliers use “5-axis” to describe a machine that can position a rotary axis and then cut in a fixed orientation. That can be completely appropriate for some parts. It is not the same process as coordinated simultaneous motion across five axes.
What it can be good for
Multiple faces, deep features, angled holes, and setups that benefit from better access without requiring continuous tool orientation during the cut.
- Confirm how the rotary axes are positioned and locked
- Review setup datum strategy and fixture repeatability
- Ask how the shop manages tool length and collision clearance
What it adds
Coordinated motion of the linear and rotary axes during a toolpath, often relevant to complex surfaces, impellers, molds, turbine-like geometry, or continuous tool orientation requirements.
- Confirm the machine kinematics and usable working envelope
- Review CAM and post-processor ownership for the actual controller
- Ask for comparable toolpath and inspection evidence
Describe the work in terms a 5-axis shop can quote responsibly.
The supplier fit depends on more than “5-axis.” Include the part, material, stock condition, critical surfaces, tolerance, finish, quantity, and whether the geometry is prototype, low-volume, or repeat production.
- 3D model, 2D drawing, datums, critical surfaces, and inspection points
- Material, hardness, heat treatment, coating, and stock allowance
- Required surface finish, blend quality, edge condition, and burr expectations
- Quantity, annual volume, revision frequency, and delivery country
- Whether the requirement is indexed machining, simultaneous motion, or not yet decided
Ask for the machine’s real envelope.
Rotary-axis travel can reduce the usable space around the part. Ask for the working envelope with the table, trunnion, fixture, tool, and tilt angle considered—not only the headline X/Y/Z travel.
Also ask: who owns the post processor and how changes are validated before production.
